Common questions about photos & visual art
Should I copyright the RAW file or the final edit? +
Best practice: register the final master (high-res TIFF/JPG of your finished edit). If you want belt-and-suspenders coverage, register both the RAW and the edit in a single ZIP — one token, two files protected.
My EXIF metadata already has the date. Why do I need this? +
EXIF can be edited with any photo editor in seconds. A blockchain timestamp can't. The whole point of Ecopyright is independent, tamper-proof verification — not a date you control yourself.
Can I register a photo I haven't shown anyone yet? +
Yes — and you should. Register the master before publishing to any platform. The earlier the timestamp, the stronger your case.
What about photos with people / model releases? +
Copyright covers the photograph itself (yours as the photographer). The model release is a separate agreement covering the subject's likeness. Both are needed for commercial use — Ecopyright handles the copyright half.
